The paper discusses the questions of variation in the sphere of functioning of proverbs based on the Russian and English languages. Synonymous, lexical, grammatical substitutions fulfill a function of specification, in this case certain evaluativity and variative conceptual content become actual. The Russian corpus presents the wide variation in contrast to English because it has more functional richness of paremiological means.
