The article is devoted to the most important page of journalistic activities of M.F. De-Poulet, who had become an editor of “Vilensky Vestnik” newspaper in 1867. During this period, the newspaper stepped into controversy with nationalistic press, which accused E.T. Baranov’s administration in sabotage of the russification of the North-West region of Russian Empire. Underlining its ideological proximity to Katkov’s "bureaucratic nationalism", De-Poulet championed his concept of "russification", which did not affect the religious sentiments of national minorities of Empire.
