In this paper we attempt to compare the product of B.K. Zaitsev "St. Sergius of Radonezh", written in the genre of the story-life, with the ancient Russian hagiographic literature. The author proves that in the text created by the contemporary writer, traits characteristic of the Old Russian spiritual literature are traced: at the level of composition, plot, selection of linguistic means, biography of the Orthodox saint. At the same time, attention is also focused on the distinctive features: creation of the image of the monk, history as a plot-forming basis, author's comments to the chapters, the final part of the work.
Keywords:genre of life, Orthodox shrines, Sergius of Radonezh, ascetic, hegumen of the Russian land, spiritual guidance, revolution.
