Burygin Alexander A.  (Lomonosov Moscow State University)

In the article, the novel Nagib Mahfouz "Children of Gebelawi" is analyzed. The author approaches this work from the point of view of the fundamental Books for Christianity and Islam: the Bible and the Koran. He makes a detailed comparison of biblical and Qur'anic images with the heroes of the novel in order to understand how great the influence of the Sacred texts is on the work of Mahfouz. The author of the article compares the prophets of Christianity and Islam with the main actors of the novel in order to understand which prototype is behind each of them. The author resorts to a comparative analysis of texts to answer this question. Also, the author examines the composition of the work, shows the undoubted influence of classical Arabic literature (namely, the genre of folk novel) on the work of N. Mahfouz. In conclusion, the author confirms that N. Mahfouz, masterfully using the metaphorical style of constructing the work, was able to build his novel as a kind of anthology of the development of the world from its creation to our days.
