The article is devoted to the economic development of Russia in the Imperial period. The authors aim to find out whether the foreign trade of the country developed according to the laws of comparative advantages of D. Ricardo and the neoclassics, or whether it followed a special path predetermined by its geographical location and state institutions. The creation of consumption centers in the geographical space as factors that change the nature and direction of foreign trade is considered for the first time in the Russian scientific literature.
