The article is devoted to the linguistic analysis of the novel-tetralogy of the Russian writer Vasily Aleksandrovich Smirnov (1905–1979) “The Discovery of the World”. Various forms of narrative subjectification and linguistic-stylistic means of forming speech portraits of characters reflecting a certain spectrum of manifestations of Russian speech of the first decades of the 20th century are considered. Methodologically the paper is based on the works of Russian scholars in stylistics. V. V. Vinogradova, V. V. Odintsov, A. I. Gorshkov
