Linguistic borrowing is a process characteristic of both bilingualism and monolingualism, when elements of another language that are alien to the native language are not regulated by knowledge of the language from which they are borrowed. In most cases, borrowed units are adapted to varying degrees at all language levels, i.e., modified in accordance with the norms of the recipient language.
