MULTIMODAL ANALYSIS IN FILM TRANSLATION: THE INTERACTION OF VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL CODES IN THE TRANSMISSION OF THE INTERCULTURAL MESSAGE

Lu Yaoran   (postgraduate, Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia (St. Petersburg, Russia) )

This paper focuses on the complex interplay of verbal and non-verbal codes in the field of film translation, shedding light on the nuanced mechanisms by which intercultural messages are transmitted across different linguistic spaces. At the heart of the study is an examination of how gestures, facial expressions, and intonation, along with verbal dialogue, combine to form a coherent narrative that transcends cultural and linguistic barriers. Through a careful analysis of cinematic scenes, this study demonstrates the key role of non-verbal elements in enhancing and sometimes modifying the message being conveyed, thus highlighting the need for interpreters to adopt a multimodal approach that incorporates both speech and non-speech aspects of communication. Contributing to the burgeoning field of multimodal analysis in philology and film studies, the study highlights the subtleties of translating not only linguistic but also visual and auditory aspects of film texts. The article argues that the reliability of translation depends not only on linguistic accuracy, but also on the translator's ability to navigate the subtleties of non-verbal communication, ensuring that the original emotional depth and cultural nuances of the film are preserved.
