This article undertakes a historiographical analysis of historical and ethnographic literature published in the XIX - early XXI centuries on the topic of the formation and development of the Altai ethnos from the middle of the XIX to the beginning of the XXI centuries. The methodology and research methods of the Russian humanities (national history, ethnology, sociology) are characterized. The current issues of the research topic are determined.
