The article examines the problem associated with folklore traditions in the work of one of the prominent representatives of Kumyk literature of the second half of the 20th - early 21st centuries, the People's Poet of Dagestan Magomed Atabaev, which is expressed in: rethinking folklore material and filling it with a relevant modern idea; updating and structural implementation of epic and Cossack songs; resuscitation of lyrical songs losing their functional significance; application of one or another structural model of folklore in a work.
