Studying the history of legal regulation of market relations in Ancient Rome during the transition period from the republic to the empire allows us to identify those moments of continuity that include not only adaptation to new conditions, but also the translation of legal ideas on the basis of which a new legal time, space and culture are formed as the basis for the formation of the legal system as a whole.
As a result, it was established that the economic liberalism of the period of the principate and the first emperors could not be long-term, since during the empire the state constantly increased the tax burden, imposed restrictions on the freedom of market relations, trade and business, which as a result caused political and military crises in general. The author also emphasizes that history is a process of self–preservation of society, where transitional periods help to identify mechanisms for adapting law to new realities.
