«THE URAL RIDGE FROM A BIRD'S-EYE VIEW...» PANORAMIC VIEW OF THE LANDSCAPE IN AN ESSAY BY M.V. MALAKHOV AND PAINTING BY A.K. DENISOV-URALSKY

Abashev V.   (PhD, Professor, Perm State National Research University )

The article analyzes M.V. Malakhov's essay «The Ural Ridge», which opens the Ural volume in «Picturesque Russia», and the image of mountain landscapes on the canvases of A.K. Denisov-Uralsky from the point of view of the principles of the artistic vision uniting them and their influence on the geopoetics of the Urals. The works of these authors are considered in the broad context of the European culture of the XIX century. in a number of cultural and historical phenomena united by the principle and idea of panoramic coverage of various phenomena of nature, history and culture. In this context, the picturesque panorama itself acts as a paradigmatic phenomenon in which a new principle of vision combining inclusiveness and detail is implemented as clearly as possible. The large-scale publishing project «Picturesque Russia» (1881–1901) appears in this context as an experience of creating a monumental geopanorama of Russia, an attempt to present all the diversity of its lands in one whole. In the essay «The Ural Ridge» by M.V. Malakhov, the principle of panoramic vision of the Urals was implemented on a large scale for the first time, which conveys the planetary scale of the boundary of continents. The same strategy of seeing the landscape from a bird's-eye view unites the Ural landscapes of the artist A.K. Denisov-Uralsky.

Keywords:panorama, panoramic vision, M.V. Malakhov, A.K. Denisov-Uralsky, geopoetics of the Urals.
