IN SEARCH OF AN AUTHOR'S VOICE: BEYOND THE LIST OF STYLISTIC DEVICES

Shmul Inna Alexander  (Candidate to Science degree (Germanic Languages), Senior Lecturer, Financial University under the Government of the Russian Federation (Moscow) )

The article considers a new approach to the study of the author's style, which goes beyond a simple description and is aimed at understanding the deep semantic connections in the text. The article criticizes the approach based on a simple listing of stylistic devices and argues that in order to understand the essence of an individual style it is necessary to study not only the devices themselves, but also their interaction, which forms a holistic system. The article suggests using linguapoetic stratification as a research method. This method involves: 1) dividing the text into layers (strata) according to a certain criterion (for example, by content, by character image, by time frame). 2) Identification of a "single stylistic dominant" in each stratum, that is a key stylistic feature that determines its character. 3) Analysis of the relationships between the strata in order to understand how the author uses these stylistic features to create a holistic artistic impression. The article also mentions the semiotic principle in linguapoetic stratification emphasizing the importance of analyzing not only linguistic means, but also their symbolic meaning.
