The article is devoted to topical issues of ethnic identity, language and culture of the Chuvash people living in the south-west of the Republic of Tatarstan: in Buinsky, Drozhzhanovsky and Tetyushsky municipal districts. The historical background of the Chuvash settlement in the region under study, the peculiarities of development, and the modern realities of ethnocultural functioning are considered. Along with the positive trend of preserving self-identity and the active work of national and cultural autonomies, negative facts are also being revealed, such as the deterioration of the demographic situation and the outflow of young people from the countryside to large cities.
