the article examines discursive strategies of manipulation used in political debates as a specific genre of institutional discourse. Based on the analysis of a corpus of English- and Russian-language debates from 2016 to 2021, the study identifies three main groups of strategies: self-presentation, oppositional, and affective. Each group includes characteristic rhetorical tactics aimed at persuasion, discrediting opponents, and influencing the audience emotionally. The methodological framework of the research includes critical discourse analysis, pragmalinguistics, cognitive linguistics, and argumentation theory. The results show that manipulative strategies are realized both verbally and paralinguistically, and their choice is determined by genre-specific and sociocultural factors. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of linguistic mechanisms of influence in political communication and may be useful in the study of political discourse pragmatics and rhetoric.
Keywords:political discourse, manipulation, discursive strategies, political debates, pragmalinguistics, critical discourse analysis, argumentation, self-presentation, emotional appeal, rhetorical tactics.
