ON THE ISSUE OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN METACOGNITIVE COMPETENCIES AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATES

The article examines the issues of interdependence between the degree of formation of metacognitive skills and indicators of academic achievement of students of non-linguistic universities in the process of mastering the discipline "Foreign language for the professional purposes". It is argued that students with the developed skills of independent regular planning, monitoring and evaluation of the learning process demonstrate higher academic performance. Despite their direct correlation with the results of mastering academic disciplines, those metacognitive skills rarely become an object that teachers pay attention to while working with students. The article emphasizes that the learning process which is the transfer of information from teacher to student does not contribute to acquiring and development of students' skills in the formation of self-learning strategies, critical analysis and self-assessment of the effectiveness of mastering academic disciplines. The acquisition of metacognitive skills requires a personalized teacher's approach to students through practical techniques and tasks introduced into educational activities.
