THE ALTAN TOBCHI СHRONICLE: A KEY SOURCE FOR STUDYING THE TEXT OF THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE MONGOLS (HISTORIOGRAPHICAL ISSUES).

Introduction. The article analyzes source and historical researches on the Altan Tobchi chronicle. The study aims to provide a historiographical review of source and historical studies into the Altan Tobchi, which contains fragments of The Secret History of the Mongols and serves as an authentic Mongolian historical source. Research Objectives. Historiographical analysis of scholarly works on the Altan Tobchi . Identification of similarities and differences between the text fragments of The Secret History of the Mongols and Altan Tobchi, based on conclusions by L. Ligeti and A. Mostaert. Source Base. The study draws on works by Ts. Zhamtsarano, S. Kozin, A. Mostaert, L. Ligeti, and I. Rachewiltz, which hold significant scholarly value for assessing the historiography The Secret History of the Mongols. Methods. Source study, historiographical analysis and comparative-historical methods. Results. Intermediate conclusions from researchers on the comparative analysis The Secret History of the Mongols and Altan Tobchi are presented. Conclusions. Studies of the chronicle rely on the text The Secret History transcribed phonetically using Chinese characters. Analyzing the content of The Secret History is challenging due to the scarcity of original Mongolian sources. In the absence of the authentic Mongolian-language text of the chronicle, the Altan Tobchi plays a crucial role in researching the editions and manuscripts of The Secret History.
