The article examines the capabilities of a new corpus of historical Japanese language from the scholarly and educational journal Meiroku Zasshi. Its authors were among the first to strive to adapt the Japanese language to the new political, cultural, and scientific reality; consequently, the texts of the articles exhibit diverse linguistic creativity. However, the language of the texts is characterized by significant complexity and requires extensive knowledge and a similar cultural background. The objective of this work is to introduce the reader to how a linguistic corpus can be used to research such complex texts and to describe its structure. The methodological foundation of the work consists of analyzing the results of researchers who utilize this corpus, as well as comparing the language of the journal's texts with contemporary Japanese. The main conclusions of the work are that text corpora not only simplify the researcher's work but also make it more efficient, providing access to a significantly larger volume of materials and detailed linguistic markup.
Keywords:corpus linguistics, morphological segmentation, meiroku zasshi, japanese language.
