The article deals with the aspects of developing students’ independence in the process of teaching a foreign language. Educational independence is considered as the ability of a student to organize educational activities. The use of project-based learning contributes to the development of students’ educational independence. The implementation of the project determines the activity organization planning. The author draws attention to the change in the role of the teacher in the process of implementing the project-based learning, who acts as a curator, providing support, and provokes independent activity on the part of students. The use of project-based learning in the process of teaching a foreign language helps to develop the educational independence of students, which is confirmed by the results of students’ achievements in the discipline.
