It is known that in historical science sources play a key role, being the only reliable way to establish the truth. In the proposed article, the authors analyzed some of the documentary sources on the history of domestic and foreign trade, the development of industrial production and entrepreneurship in Russia. These are statistical reference books, analytical reports of a number of departments, collections of laws, decrees and orders, almanacs, published in the Russian Empire in the 1850s – early 20th century. The authors and compilers of these publications were high-level specialists: Nebolsin G.P., Semenov A.V., Novitsky K.A., Shendzikovsky I.A., Timofeev A.G., Strozhev V.N., Spassky P.Kh., Dmitriev-Mamonov V.A. and others.
The sources reviewed enable researchers to track the dynamics of the Russian economy in a specific historical period.
