The research relevance is determined not only by the ubiquity of slang in various social strata, but also by its permanent evolution, mirroring the socio-cultural metamorphoses taking place in society.
The research goal is to define the essence of slang, to identify the immanent regularities of its genesis and to classify slang on the basis of linguistic criteria.
In the study the following tasks have been solved: the existing theoretical approaches to the definition of the concept of «slang» have been studied, the etymological foundations of the typology of slang units have been analyzed.
The research methodology includes theoretical methods of analysis, synthesis, classification and generalization, as well as the method of comparative analysis of specialized linguistic literature.
Based on the results, the following conclusions were formulated: slang, being a non-normative component of the lexical composition of the language, is a linguistic phenomenon with a high degree of expressiveness, pronounced emotional coloring and a limited area of use. Russian slang functions mainly in oral form and serves as a faithful reflection of the specific interests, values and worldview of a certain social group. The proposed linguistic classification of Russian slang is based on the thematic affiliation, morphological features and functional role of slang units in the Russian language.
Keywords:slang, lexical-semantic group, classification, lexical units, linguistics.
