PRE-TRANSLATION ANALYSIS OF A LITERARY TEXT AS A POTENTIAL ACTIVATOR OF EXPRESSIVENESS IN STUDENTS' WRITTEN UTTERANCES IN NATIVE AND FOREIGN TONGUES

The paper focuses on the linguodidactics of translation, specifically on the potential of pre-translation analysis in teaching expressiveness in the written speech of students of linguistic departments. The authors of the paper view pre-translation text analysis as an instrument to interpret how the writer achieves effectiveness and expressiveness and compensates for inevitable losses, if any. Expressiveness, which is subsequently intended to be taught, is understood primarily in terms of the poetic function that ensures the unity of form and content. It doesn’t imply a pile-up of tropes, but it presupposes the maximum correspondence between the writer’s intention and the means of its expression, the precision of word choice, the ability to say much in little, and the graphic arrangement of an utterance. Poetic prose, namely the stories "Chistye Prudy" by Y.M. Nagibin and "My Home, My Home" by W. Saroyan, serves as material for this research. The paper concludes with tasks for making up one's own expressive written utterances based on results of pre-translation analysis.
