CHENGYU WITH AN EMOTIVE COMPONENT IN CHINESE

Liu Shushuai   (graduate student, Perm State National Research University )

This article explores Chinese idioms (chengyu) that express fundamental human emotions of joy and anger. The aim of the study is to analyze the semantic gradations of these emotions within Chinese fixed expressions and to examine their national and cultural specificity. The focus is on classifying chengyu based on the intensity of emotional states: for joy, levels range from calm satisfaction to unrestrained delight, while for anger, they range from hidden discontent to destructive rage. Special emphasis is placed on the pragmatic aspect of using these idioms: the author demonstrates how, in contemporary discourse, they often take on an ironic or satirical tone, becoming tools for social criticism.

Keywords:Chinese idioms, chengyu, emotions, joy, anger, intercultural communication.
