The article examines the multifaceted role of improvisation in the system of professional choreographic education. The author argues that improvisation functions not merely as a creative technique, but as a purposeful pedagogical method that shapes the key competencies of a future specialist.
Through an interdisciplinary analysis — drawing on philosophy, cultural studies, pedagogy, and dance theory — the essence of improvisation as a phenomenon is revealed, and its evolution is traced from ancient conceptions (illustrated by the Socratic method) to contemporary interpretations within the context of postmodern culture. Particular attention is given to the pedagogical dimension: improvisation is interpreted as a tool for developing creative thinking that fosters the synthesis of intellectual and physical abilities in a dancer. It is emphasized that the culture of professional improvisation constitutes one of the key indicators of a choreographer’s level of training, significantly influencing the effectiveness of the ensemble they lead.
