This article analyzes N.A. Nekrasov's poem “A person only in solitude…”. Moving beyond debates about its addressee, the study focuses on the antithesis between the rigorist loner and the indulgent collective (“the world”). This opposition is examined within the context of Nekrasov's late work and through parallels with his poem “Who Lives Well in Russia.” The analysis reveals the text to be Nekrasov's meditation on the permissibility of compromise in public activity and on folk wisdom as the supreme moral arbiter.
