The article discusses one of the key problems of modern higher education linguodidactics — the problem of reducing the motivation of non-linguistic and linguistic students to learn a foreign language. The relevance of the study is due to the contradiction between the increasing requirements of the global labor market for the level of foreign language proficiency and the pragmatic, often superficial attitude of modern students towards the learning process. The purpose of the article is to systematize theoretical approaches to the phenomenon of educational motivation and to propose a set of practical methodological strategies that allow a university teacher to effectively stimulate the cognitive activity of students. Special attention is paid to the paradigm shift of the teacher's role from a translator of knowledge to a facilitator of the educational process, the use of authentic context, digital tools and psychological and pedagogical techniques to reduce the «affective filter».
Keywords:motivation to learn a foreign language, higher education, teacher role, internal and external motivation, communicative approach, gamification, learner autonomy, affective factor, and professional-oriented learning.
