The article considers the problems of oil production after the collapse of the USSR and the ways in which they were solved during the first years of the existence of Azerbaijan as an independent state in the 1990s. Particular emphasis in the article is placed on the future of oil production, due to the need to make the transition from a command-administrative to a market economy, and the ways of resolving financial and technological issues for exploring the oil deposits on the Caspian Sea shelf.
