The role of the Middle East in the foreign policy of the German Federative Republic is determined by several factors. Among them are historical responsibility towards Jews and obligation to provide Israel’s right to existence and safety; dependence of the German economy on the energy resources delivered from the Arab countries; proximity of the region to Europe and coming from the region threats such as terrorism, illicit migration. The author of the article provides periodization of the German Middle Eastern policy after World War II, paying special attention to the relations of the Federal Republic with the Palestinian National Authority and assuming that these relations are subject to continuity. Declaring solidarity with the US course in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Berlin has its own interest in the region. The volume of the German economic aid shows the German aspiration to take the leading place in the foreign economic relations with the Palestinian National Authority. Expanding influence in the Middle East by systematic and active capital penetration, Germany counts on long-term strengthening of its political positions in the region.
