Introduction. The article analyzes the training of the average command personnel of the Red Army artillery in 1941. All artillery and artillery technical schools are represented in which, before the Great Patriotic War, artillery officers were trained. Materials and methods. Previously unpublished and little-studied archival sources of the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense (CAMO) (information from historical forms of some schools, orders of NGOs) have been introduced into scientific circulation. The following applied methods were used in the course of the study: historical-systemic and historical-comparative. The use of these methods made it possible in the study to more objectively assess the contribution of the leadership of the Red Army artillery in the rearrangement of the educational process of military educational institutions for wartime. Results. It is shown that, in general, the activities of the schools, especially in the second half of 1941, were productive (three times more officers were released from schools), but the quality of training was not at a sufficient level compared with pre-war graduates. Conclusions. The author concludes that the military leadership and the command of artillery schools were unprepared for an organized transition to a shortened period of study in wartime, since they did not have mobilization curricula with calculations of study time and subject programs for various periods of study. Schools had to develop such plans and calculations in the process of perestroika itself in a military manner, when most of the experienced command and teaching staff were leaving for the active army.
