The article presents a comprehensive linguistic and cultural analysis of the word «религиозный» and its English counterpart «religious». The data from explanatory, translational and etymological dictionaries served as the material for the study, as well as data from the Corpus of Contemporary American English, the British National Corpus and the National Corpus of the Russian Language. The comparative, contrastive, descriptive, corpus research methods used allowed us to identify common and distinctive semantic characteristics of the Russian word «религиозный» and its English equivalent. It is demonstrated that in English-speaking culture, the word has acquired additional shades of meaning – from a believer to a person who is very careful or strict about something. This shift is especially noticeable in the American version of English and is manifested in the frequent use of the construction «religious about sth» with the meaning «strictly adhere to something» or «be very attentive to something».
